In 1876, Jacob and Frederick Beringer founded what would become one of Napa Valley’s most enduring estates. Inspired by the Rhine Valley of Germany, they purchased 215 acres in St. Helena and began building both above and below ground.
By 1877, workers had completed the first two floors of the Old Stone Winery and started digging 1,200 linear feet of caves by hand. These caves were designed for ideal temperature and humidity to age fine wine naturally.
