Winter rain in January and February of 2018 eased long drought conditions. After a relatively wet winter, both bud break and flowering occurred later than average, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Warm summer temperatures with cool marine influences in the mornings and evenings, allowed for a long growing season, uninterrupted by any major heat spikes. The mild summer run was followed by extended fall sunshine with moderate heat and no early rains, creating near-ideal conditions to allow fruit extended hang time for gradual ripening, increase sugar levels and flavor complexity development.
Steinhauer Ranch (22%), Bancroft Ranch (15%), Pauli (3%) and Marc Mondavi Ranch (4%) vineyards atop Howell Mountain provide the foundation for the 2018 blend. Fruit from the St. Helena Home Vineyard (25%) and Chabot Vineyard (15%) add the warmth of the St. Helena appellation to the overall blend. Exceptional fruit from Spring Mountain’s Marston Vineyard (6%), Oakville’s Gamble Ranch Vineyard (4%) join contributions from Calistoga’s Bear Flats Vineyard (3%) and Mount Veeder’s Derr Family Vineyard (3%).
"Really focused and crafted with exemplary Napa cabernet character." - 98 Points, James Suckling
After a relatively dry January significant rainfall arrived in February, along with mild temperatures. Bud break was early, but was slowed by heavy April showers. While still early by historical standards, picking began about a week later than 2015, and continued at a leisurely pace, allowing the grapes to reach full flavor maturity. The extended season helped to balance acids and add complexity to the layers of flavors. Warm temperatures arrived as harvest began, but ultimately, everything came together in the best possible way.
This classic blend of mountain and valley fruit yields both structure and richness. Steinhauer Ranch (40%), Bancroft Ranch (15%) and Pauli (5%) vineyards atop Howell Mountain provide the foundation for the 2016 blend. Exceptional fruit from the Gamble Ranch in Oakville (15%), along with St. Helena’s Home Vineyard (10%) and Chabot Vineyard (10%) join contributions from Mount Veeder’s Lampyridae Vineyard (5%).
"Breathtaking. Exceptional integration of super ripe blackberries and the very finest oak." - 99 Points, James Suckling
The 2014 growing season was unusually early, though not surprising given the state’s ongoing drought. Substantial rain in late February and early March set up the vines for a vigorous start. The hotter summer months proved milder than expected and was perfect for the grapes. The quality of 2014 grapes is outstanding with dark color, intense aromatics, and great fruit character.
Bancroft Ranch and Steinhauer Ranch vineyards atop Howell Mountain provide the foundation (62%) for the 2014 blend. A significant portion (20%) comes from the St. Helena Home Vineyard, as well as the Chabot Vineyard in the St. Helena AVA. Marston Ranch Vineyard on Spring Mountain and Derr Family Vineyard on Mount Veeder both provide 7% each to the final blend, and finally, 4% of the Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from the Kenefick Vineyard in Calistoga.
"Rich, full-bodied and beautifully concentrated." - 96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
