Tasting Notes

A fabulous expression of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine draws you in with aromas of dark, ripe fruit and oak spice. On the palate, lush flavors of plum and currant rest alongside hints of mocha and dried blueberry. Robust, plush tannins support these bold flavors and give way to a long, persistent finish.

“Ripe-blackberry, cooked black-cherry, roasted-coffee, dried-earth and chocolate aromas. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, polished tannins. Round and caressing with a velvety, chocolatey finish.” - James Suckling, January 2021

“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Borrow Pit Vineyard comes from a site in Oakville and was brought up in 91% new oak. It’s a beauty, offering a plush, full-bodied style as well as lots of plum and currant fruits, notes of tobacco, chocolate, and leafy herbs, a seamless mouthfeel, and an upfront, undeniably delicious style that’s going to evolve for 10-12 years.” - Jeb Dunnuck, January 28, 2021

“A new wine in this range, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Borrow Pit Vineyard emerges from the front blocks of Gamble Ranch, in Oakville, a pretty special neighborhood. Dark, powerful and brooding, the 2018 offers up a compelling mélange of black cherry, chocolate, mocha, spice and licorice. This is an impressive debut. I won't be surprised if the Borrow Pit becomes one of the stars in the Beringer range as the vines get older.” - Antonio Galloni, March 2021

Mark Beringer - Winemaker

Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of Beringer Vineyards' founding brother Jacob Beringer, was immersed in wine from the moment he was born in the heart of the Napa Valley. As the direct descendant to Beringer's first winemaker and one of the most iconic family names in Napa Valley wine history, he knew from a young age that he would follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. As a young man he spent many hours working in his family's wine store in Saint Helena, expanding his knowledge of wine as well as gaining an appreciation for wines outside of the famous region he has always called home.

An exceptional vintage, the 2018 season started with a cool spring that delayed flowering but fruit set was fine and even. With few exceptions, Summer was moderate, sunny and dry without major heat spikes. The fine weather continued on through the Fall, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to hang longer on the vine to develop flavors and achieve phenolic ripeness without additional sugar accumulation, resulting in beautiful structure, intense color, concentration of fruit and excellent balance in the wines.
