Howell Mountain is also the home for Beringer’s single vineyard Cabernet Franc, long a favorite in the Rhine House tasting room by staff and customers of many years. The Cabernet Franc demonstrates the intensity and concentration of flavors resulting from Howell Mountain’s restrictive soils and unique microclimates.
“Aromas of currants, dried leaves, mocha, charred wood and toffee. It’s full-bodied with firm, ultra-fine tannins and a sleek, creamy texture. Layered and seamless. Delicious. Rather delicate finish.” - James Suckling, January 2021
“The 2018 Cabernet Franc Bancroft Ranch is laced with red cherry fruit, mint, rose petal and blood orange. Silky and medium in body, the Bancroft Ranch Cabernet is super-expressive today. Pliant fruit and impeccable balance will make it easy to drink pretty much upon release. This is an especially forward style of Franc, especially for Howell Mountain.” - Antonio Galloni, March 2021
February saw abundant rains, followed by lots of filtered light in spring and early summer. Both bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and cooler marine influences, virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for winemakers to allow their fruit to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels. Volume is looking great, up 20-30% increase over average crop quantity.
Our Bancroft Ranch Vineyard Cabernet Franc is one of the select single vineyard wines blended into our Private Reserve. Bancroft Ranch sits on top of Howell Mountain at an elevation of 1770 feet with rolling hills, well-drained white volcanic ash soils, and a rock underlay. The fruit that comes from this mountaintop vineyard is concentrated, with currant flavors and thick skins yielding structured tannins.
Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of Beringer Vineyards' founding brother Jacob Beringer, was immersed in wine from the moment he was born in the heart of the Napa Valley. As the direct descendant to Beringer's first winemaker and one of the most iconic family names in Napa Valley wine history, he knew from a young age that he would follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. As a young man he spent many hours working in his family's wine store in Saint Helena, expanding his knowledge of wine as well as gaining an appreciation for wines outside of the famous region he has always called home.
