Winemaking
To maintain the unique characteristics of the different lots from varying areas of the vineyard, each is monitored carefully through the vinification and aging process. Extended maceration developed generous tannins to enhance the lush mouthfeel of the blend and extracted a
maximum of color, aromas, and flavors. The wines underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel for further development of texture and mouthfeel. The final blend was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (36% new).
Vintage
The 2023 growing season in Knights Valley was characterized by consistent, mild weather and one of the longest growing seasons in recent memory. Winter and spring rains provided full reservoirs and healthy soils, while the mild summer weather supported healthy canopy growth
and slow, even ripening. The result was fruit with purity, elegance, and optimal ripeness. The grapes for this wine were harvested between October 20 – November 8, 2023.
Vineyards
Located in a remote, bucolic corner of Sonoma County, just 17 miles north of the Beringer winery, Knights Valley sits in the shadow of Mount St. Helena. Its hilly terrain and rocky, alluvial soils offer the kind of drainage Petit Verdot thrives on, giving the wine its bold, structured character.
The Mallacomes name is a nod to the valley’s earlier identity as part of Rancho Mallacomes, an 1843 Mexican land grant that once covered much of what is now Knights Valley. The word “Mallacomes” comes from the nearby Serro de los Mallacomes (known today as Mount St. Helena) and connects this wine to the region’s long‑standing landscape and history, not a specific vineyard.
