Beringer has owned and farmed its Knights Valley vineyards since the mid-1960s when the
Beringer family recognized that the cobbled, rocky, alluvial soils were a great place to grow
high-quality wine grapes. The Knights Valley designation was first used on a Beringer label
in 1974. The winery was instrumental in garnering official recognition for the area as a
premier winegrowing region, resulting in the award of its own American Viticulture Area
(AVA) designation in 1983.

Though the intense violet color of Beringer’s 2023 Knights Valley Mallacomes Cabernet Franc
is a clue to its fragrant bouquet, the freshness of this wine’s wild violet, lavender, pink
peppercorn, and light sandalwood aromas is startling, nonetheless. Such intensity becomes
radiant on the palate with a bright, red fruit profile of raspberry, cranberry, and pomegranate
flavors accented by sweet blood orange and cumin spice. Neatly structured, interwoven tannins deftly hold this wine’s juicy red berry notes and spice through a mouthwatering, lasting finish. Enjoy this Cabernet Franc with pan-seared steak and arugula salad, arancini, or parmesan cheese and crackers.

Winemaking

To maintain the unique characteristics of the different lots from varying areas of the vineyard, each is monitored carefully through the vinification and aging process. Extended maceration developed generous tannins to enhance the lush mouthfeel of the blend and extracted a maximum of color, aromas, and flavors. The wines underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel for further development of texture and mouthfeel. The final blend was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (43% new).

Vintage

The 2023 growing season in Knights Valley was characterized by consistent, mild weather and one of the longest growing seasons in recent memory. This vintage saw extended hang time and above-average crop yields. Winter and spring rains provided full reservoirs and healthy soils, while the mild summer weather supported healthy canopy growth and slow, even ripening. The result was fruit with purity, elegance, and optimal ripeness. The grapes for this wine were harvested on October 2, 2023.

Vineyards

Located in a remote, bucolic region of Sonoma County, just 17 miles north of the Beringer Napa winery, Knights Valley lies in the shadow of Mount St. Helena. Here, hilly terrain descends to rocky, alluvial soils where ancient rivers once ran. Spanning approximately 600 acres, this well-draining vineyard site is ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot that produce bold, richly structured wines.
