The 2018 Pauli Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a striking expression of this exceptional site, showcasing a deep ruby hue and remarkable clarity. The extended hang time of the 2018 vintage allowed for optimal ripening, resulting in a wine with beautifully layered aromatics of dark plum, cassis, and ripe blackberry, accented by hints of cinnamon, clove, and cedar. On the palate, structured yet velvety tannins provide a refined framework for the wine’s rich, concentrated fruit. Nuances of cocoa, espresso, and vanilla emerge with aeration, adding complexity and depth.

Vintage

Winter rain in January and February of 2018 eased long drought conditions. After a relatively wet winter, both bud break and flowering occurred later than average, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Warm summer temperatures with generous sun exposure moderated by cool marine influences in the mornings and evenings, allowed for a long summer growing season, virtually uninterrupted by any major heat spikes. The mild summer run was followed by extended fall sunshine with moderate heat and no early rains, creating near-ideal conditions to allow fruit extended hang time for gradual ripening, increase sugar levels and flavor complexity development.

Vineyards

Pauli Vineyard is located on Howell Mountain. The 15-acre vineyard has volcanic-based soils that are restrictive and thus foster grapes of great intensity and structure. Pauli Vineyard first appeared in the Private Reserve blend at the 2009 vintage. Pauli Cabernet shows a luscious fruit core from the outset, accentuated by ripe tannins.
