Tasting Notes

Hailing from cool Carneros, the 2021 Winery Exclusive Chardonnay bears a clean and energetic style that makes it both refreshing and satisfying. A pale lemon colored wine, it carries rich aromatics evoking Meyer lemon and white peach that evolve in the glass and combine with a subtle hint of Mexican vanilla from the light oak treatment. On the palate, lively acidity supports flavors of Golden Delicious apple, toasted oak, and Anjou pear through to a long, fresh, enjoyable finish.

Winemaking

Vineyard lots were carefully separated to allow each lot to be evaluated for inclusion in these limited-release wines. The Chardonnay arrived early and quickly from Carneros where the fruit was picked at optimal ripeness and flavor to emphasize a fresh, bright, and vibrant viewpoint. The juice was 100% barrel fermented in 100% French oak with 20% new and 80% once-used, with bi-weekly lees stirring to enhance a creamy, luxurious mouthfeel. 

Vintage

There was early anticipation of a drought year with the start of the sunny 2021 vintage presenting low humidity, high heat, and high winds occurring as soon as the beginning of May. Periods of late rain refreshed the vineyards in the early summer with mild temperatures rounding out the end of a low-yield season without any of the significant climate and weather issues seen in some of the previous seasons. Whites in the 2021 vintage did not have strong phenolic character and were particularly well-balanced with fruit concentration and acidity.
