2019 Beringer Knights Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 Beringer Knights Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 Beringer Knights Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Description

Description

Beringer Vineyards has owned and farmed its Knights Valley vineyards since the mid-1960s, when the Beringer family recognized that the cobbled, rocky alluvial soils were a great place to grow high quality wine grapes. The Knights Valley designation was first used on a Beringer label in 1974. Beringer was instrumental in garnering official recognition for the area in 1983 as a premier wine growing region with the award of its own American Viticulture Area (AVA) designation.

    Ken’s Wine Guide

“This medium purple colored Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a black currant and black tea bouquet with hints of moist pipe tobacco, vanilla, and black cherry. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with medium acidity. The mouthfeel is round, elegant, and well-balanced. The flavor profile is black currant and crushed stone minerality with notes of black cherry and oak. We also detected hints of blueberry and chocolate as well. The finish is dry, and its fine-grained dusty tannins stick around for quite a while. The Tasting Panel would pair this Cab with a Sunday roast beef with Yorkshire pudding. Enjoy – KWGTP.” - Ken Hoggins, February 1, 2022

“Aromas of black tea, blackberry and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied with velvety, slightly tense tannins. Lovely black-fruited palate with dried-flower and herb character. Roses, violets and sage. Nicely balanced and long. Lovely density in the center-palate. Best after 2025.” - James Suckling, June 1, 2022

Tasting Notes

Dark violet with shimmering garnet color tones, the 2019 Knights Valley Reserve has a beautiful bouquet of ripe black cherry and boysenberry, with touches of tea leaf, lavender, and fresh sage. The fruit is bright and lively, showing flavors of black currant, blackberries, and crème de cassis cordial, supported by warm spice notes of cinnamon, vanilla bean, and allspice. Velvety-rich in texture with fine-grained polished tannins and an elegant lengthy finish with concentrated, dense, dark fruit, accompanied by a precise tension and balance that pleases the palate from first sip to last.

Vintage

Abundant late winter rains gave the soils much needed moisture to kick off the 2019 growing season. The long, warm summer saw few extreme heat events and the typical foggy mornings set the stage for producing vibrant and expressive wines. The long and relatively mild finish to the season helped to preserve freshness and finesse in the fruit with extended hangtime producing great color, flavor, structure, and tannin. Overall, the season was marked by exceptional fruit development with bright acidity, producing an outstanding vintage. The fruit for this wine was picked from October 17 through 21, 2019.

Knights Valley AVA

Knight's Valley

Vineyard

Located in a remote and bucolic location in Sonoma County just 17 miles north of the Beringer Napa winery, Knights Valley lies in the shadow of Mount St. Helena with hilly terrain that descends to rocky, alluvial soils where ancient rivers once ran. Warm during the day, cool at night, this well-draining site produces bold and richly structured reds with intense dark fruit.

Winemaking

We select only the finest wines from our Knight’s Valley Estate to make our Reserve. Knights Valley Reserve is a vineyard block selection followed by an individual barrel selection. To maintain the unique characteristics of the different lots from varying areas of the vineyard, they are kept separate through vinification and aging, and only the most expressive are chosen for this Reserve bottling. Extended maceration created more dominant tannins, enhancing the lush mouthfeel of the blend while extracting a maximum of color, aromas, and flavors. The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine was aged in small French Nevers oak barrels (74% percent new) for 18 months, enhancing the rich mouthfeel and structure.

Ryan Rech - Winemaker

In 2016, Ryan returned to Napa Valley to join Beringer Vineyards as Luxury Red Winemaker and crafted wines from the Knight’s Valley estate. He was appointed Sr. Winemaker and General Manager in 2017 and elevated to Chief Winemaker in 2021. Ryan is honored to bring recognition to the wines produced at one of Napa Valley’s best known and most beloved wineries, following in the footsteps of a roster of acclaimed chief winemakers such as Ed Sbragia, Myron Nightingale, Laurie Hook, and Mark Beringer.
