Description

Description

Chabot Vineyard lies east of the Silverado Trail, north of the road leading up Howell Mountain to Bancroft and Steinhauer Ranch. The chunks of shiny obsidian heavily strewn through its soil reflect the locale, known as “Glass Mountain.” An underlying layer of pumice and bedrock ensures excellent drainage. The inky, highly structured, deeply flavored Cabernet from this vineyard was the first that Beringer Vineyards elected to bottle as a Private Reserve, in 1977, and it continues to be a frequent component of contemporary vintages of Private Reserve. Chabot Cabernet consistently has finely knit tannins, and layers of black currant with hints of mint and cedar. Careful attention is paid to vineyard blocks, which are kept separate and vinified with a goal of extracting maximum flavor.

“This is aromatic on the nose with notes of cassis, blueberries, tobacco, cigar box, dried tomato leaf and black olive. Graphite and some peppery notes, too. Ripe and developed fruit character with full body and plush tannins. Generous and succulent. Long finish with chocolatey notes.” - James Suckling, February 2022

“My co-favorite of this year's crop of single-vineyard Cabernets is the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Chabot Vineyard, from a warm, obsidian-rich site on Glass Mountain. It boasts classic scents of crushed stone, pencil shavings and ripe cassis on the nose, followed by a full-bodied palate that's a paragon of balance, with rich, velvety tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish.” - Joe Czerwinski, June 2022
