This powerful Zinfandel is deeply red in color, with evident but not overpowering oak, nuances of oak spice, vanilla, black and white pepper, and traditional brambly aromas and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, blackberry jam with notes of herbs and hints of tobacco leaf. Medium tannins give way to a round, full mouthfeel and a lingering, lasting finish. Approachable and ready to stand with barbecue, roasted stews and grilled vegetables.
An hour north of upper Napa Valley, Beringer’s Clear Mountain vineyard lies on the North side of Cobb Mountain, in Lake County’s renowned Red Hills AVA. Red volcanic soils laced with chunks of obsidian and other rocks frame a perfect warm growing region for deeply flavored Zinfandel, aided by cooler evenings that allows the fruit to rest and gain complexity, with signature layers of intense, classic Zinfandel aromas and taste.
Vineyard lots are carefully separated to allow each lot to be evaluated for inclusion in these limited release wines. To highlight freshness, the fruit is fermented in small stainless tanks, undergoing 100% secondary malolactic fermentation prior to extended aging for 20 months in a mixture of French and American oak. The grapes for this wine were harvested on September 12, 2016.
The near-perfect 2016 growing season started early, saw ideal weather throughout and wrapped up as the North Coast’s first significant fall rainstorm arrived on October 14. Thanks to a relatively steady and mild July and August and then a series of warm days at the end of the growing season, vineyards progressed to perfect ripeness.
