Description

Description

Beringer’s Chardonnay vineyards span several sub-appellations in southern Napa Valley, where fog from the San Pablo Bay works its way north most afternoons during the growing season, cooling the vineyards and allowing for a longer maturation period. The majority of the 2016 blend comes from our Gamble Ranch in Oakville, as well as Big Ranch and Los Carneros Stanly vineyards. These vineyards produce Chardonnays with layers of fine fruit flavors and crisp natural acidity.

“A fresh, flavorful white with sliced pears and cooked apples. Hints of vanilla and cream. Medium to full body. Delicious finish. Real Napa chardonnay. Drink now.” - James Suckling, February 2020

    Jeb Dunnuck

“The 2018 Chardonnay is a solid, classic Napa Chardonnay with plenty of ripe tropical, orange, and guava notes as well as subtle oak. It's nicely textured, beautifully balanced, and a fun, delicious wine to drink over the coming couple of years." - Jeb Dunnuck, February 2020

Wine & Vintage Details

Tasting Note

Surprisingly plush and creamy, with a toastiness and aromas and flavors of tart citrus lead with hints of white peaches, delicious apple and a bit of lemon meringue, sea salt caramel and toasted almonds. Balanced, with moderate acidity, the brightness of the Chardonnay fruit shines through.

Vintage Note

2018 was a near perfect season, welcomed after several tense vintages. It began with abundant February rains followed by drying sun and weather allowing for even flowering and bud break. A slightly later start was followed by consistently ideal weather, with harvest beginning in mid-September and continuing for a month with passes through the vineyard until mid-October. Generally normal to heavier fruit with great flavor and complexity were the hallmark of the season.

Napa Valley

Vineyard

Beringer's Chardonnay vineyards span a pair of sub-appellations in southern Napa Valley, where fog from the San Pablo Bay works its way north most afternoons during the growing season, cooling the vineyards and allowing for a longer maturation period. The majority of the 2018 blend comes from our Big Ranch in Oak Knoll, balanced in equal measure from the Gamble Ranch in Oakville with a touch from the famed Stanley Ranch in Carneros. These vineyards produce Chardonnays with layers of fine fruit flavors and crisp natural acidity.

Winemaking

Chardonnay was harvested late night and early morning at the coolest part of the day, quickly to gentle pressing. The wine was largely fermented in French oak (25% new) and the balance in stainless to retain freshness. Some 65% of the wine was allowed to undergo secondary malolactic fermentation to find the right balance allowing a solid acid backbone to be balanced with a creamy mouthfeel and lush texture, with lees stirring twice monthly.

Mark Beringer - Winemaker

Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of Beringer Vineyards' founding brother Jacob Beringer, was immersed in wine from the moment he was born in the heart of the Napa Valley. As the direct descendant to Beringer's first winemaker and one of the most iconic family names in Napa Valley wine history, he knew from a young age that he would follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. As a young man he spent many hours working in his family's wine store in Saint Helena, expanding his knowledge of wine as well as gaining an appreciation for wines outside of the famous region he has always called home.
