Beringer Vineyards has owned and farmed its Knights Valley vineyards since the mid-1960s, when the Beringer family recognized that the cobbled, rocky alluvial soils were a great place to grow high-quality wine grapes. The Knights Valley designation was first used on a Beringer label in 1974 and Beringer was instrumental in garnering official recognition for the area in 1983 as an American Viticulture Area (AVA) designation.

Tasting Notes

Aromas of crushed blackberry, plum, cassis and vanilla pop from the glass and lead to a plush, full-bodied mouthfeel with generous cherry pie, cinnamon spice, roasted coffee and graphite flavors. The wine is rich with deep, saturated color, a dense texture and smooth, polished tannins.

Vineyard Notes

Overall, it was a very high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon crop. Knights Valley was first acquired by Beringer in 1961, and to this day is a place of rustic and unspoiled beauty stretching for miles. Located just 17 miles north of the winery in Sonoma County, it still has a bucolic feel—miles of rolling hills that meander down into a rocky, alluvial valley floor where a grand river used to run. Everything about the place gives one a sense of its uniqueness, including the wines it yields. The Knights Valley’s rocky terrain, the growth and evolution of the vineyards and the unique blocks within the 600 acres in which Beringer has farmed for decades makes this a truly magnificent growing site. Grapes for the 2014 Knights Valley Reserve were harvested between September 17th and October 10th.

Vintage Notes

The 2014 vintage offered an ideal growing season. Although California’s drought brought another dry winter, the growing season started with a warm, dry spring and relatively early bud break. Summer was mild and consistent with even, warm temperatures throughout. Knights Valley often sees greater fluctuation in temperature than Napa Valley, with intensely warm days that cool off dramatically in the evening. The 2014 growing season was very even with no brutal heat spikes. Warm days with plenty of sunshine and cool evenings allowed for excellent ripening, phenolic and flavor development in the grapes.

Winemaking Notes

Knights Valley Reserve is a barrel selection, a blend of the best vineyard lots in a given vintage. To maintain the unique characteristics of the different lots from varying areas of the vineyard, they are kept separate through vinification and aging, and only the most expressive are selected for this Reserve bottling.

Extended maceration created larger tannins to enhance the lush mouthfeel of the blend and extracted a maximum of color, aromas and flavors. The wines were aged in French Nevers oak barrels (47 percent new) for 19 months, enhancing the rich mouthfeel and structure. A small portion of Malbec and Petit Verdot was also added to add further complexities to this memorable wine.
