For over thirty years, the prestigious Private Reserve wines have offered the best that Beringer and the Napa Valley have to offer. Built on generations of winemaking expertise and crafted from a prized collection of single vineyards, these wines epitomize the transcendent quality attainable through masterful blending. Beringer applies the designation of Private Reserve only to the wines that come from the finest grapes from the best vineyards, made with the most exacting winemaking techniques. The only year a Private Reserve vintage was not achieved was 1979, when photosynthetic shock, or heat shock, prevented the vines from producing grapes.
The running mate to the Cabernet, Beringer's Private Reserve Chardonnay highlights the richness and complexity of this varietal and has been a benchmark Chardonnay since its first vintage in 1978. This wine is usually a single-vineyard Chardonnay sourced from the Gamble Ranch Vineyard in Oakville. Gamble is heralded for its intensely flavored fruit and balanced structure. The 1994 Private Reserve Chardonnay was awarded "Wine of the Year" by Wine Spectator.Shop Private Reserve Chardonnay
When Beringer first acquired Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Lemmon Ranch (later called Chabot Vineyard) in 1977, Winemaker Myron Nightingale and then Assistant Winemaker Ed Sbragia knew they had the makings of a distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon. After two years in French oak barrels, the wine was still dark, chewy and tannic. Even bottle aging didn't soften its intensity. In the 1981 Orange County Fair, it won a gold medal as the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the show, and the limited amount produced was released as Beringer's first Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1986 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was named the #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator. Today, Laurie Hook carries on the exemplary standard of quality, consistency and balance that the Beringer Private Reserve is known for worldwide. After over two decades producing these reserve wines, her goal remains unchanged from those that preceded her: to make the best Cabernet Sauvignon that Napa Valley can produce – an achievement that has surpassed even Jacob Beringer's ambitious early vision for the winery.Shop Private Reserve Cabernet
The techniques used to make this special Sauterne-style dessert wine were developed by Myron Nightingale, Winemaker from 1971–1985, and his wife Alice. Three decades were spent in developing their method for making a wine in the style of the classic French Sauternes. The intense flavors that come from this wine are remarkable, and it is a beautiful demonstration of how science and art can come together in winemaking.Shop Nightingale
Beringer farms an extraordinary collection of seven single vineyard sites including several at mountain-top elevations. Hailing from Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, Mt. Veeder, and St. Helena, these single vineyards deliver unique styles of Cabernet Sauvignon that are combined to form our flagship Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
When vintage conditions allow, Beringer also produces small individual vineyard bottlings from the sites that go into Private Reserve. These single vineyard wines are the utmost expression of each vintage and of site-specific terroir. Because of the very limited nature of these bottlings, our single vineyard Cabernets are available for sale only through our web site and at our winery. You can also find our Bancroft Ranch Merlot at fine restaurants and wine shops.

A quantum is the smallest unit of energy achievable in science. The combination of these tiny particles results in a system of great expression and complexity. Similarly in wine, each grape varietal offers unique flavor and structure, and each vineyard contributes yet another unique expression of those characteristics. The blend of this wine shifts from vintage to vintage, driven by the evolving varietal expressions each year.Learn more about master blending

Since 1876, Beringer has been a pioneer in California winemaking. We were the first winery to experiment with gravity-flow fermentation techniques; we dug the first naturally temperature-controlled caves by hand in the 1880s; and were the first winery to open our doors to tourism after Prohibition. In the 1960s we pioneered vineyard development in Knights Valley, a small and ruggedly beautiful region just northwest of the Beringer winery. Then in the 1970s, at the start of Central Coast winemaking, we started developing our holdings in this region.
Now, as a result of decades of pioneering, Beringer farms a diverse and expressive series of vineyards across Napa Valley, Sonoma County, and the California Central Coast. Each site celebrates varietals that grow particularly well in that region, and all of our vineyards are certified sustainable. Beringer Regional Estates wines celebrate our pioneering history and our amazing vineyard sites across California.
