The 2011 Merlot has a remarkable concentration of fruit with generous notes of black cherry and dark plum throughout. Finely grained tannins and a nice texture give this Merlot a distinct level of complexity while still being very approachable from the start.

The 2012 vintage began with textbook conditions that continued through much of Harvest. Spring bud break was ideal with steady flowering and even fruit set. A lengthy stretch of warm days and cool nights during the summer months allowed for optimal ripeness to develop in the grapes and an exceptional quality overall. Late and light rains held off until the grapes found ripeness, bringing exceptional quality to the crush. Located 17 miles northwest of the winery, Knights Valley vineyard is approximately 600 acres, and has rocky, well-drained soils that are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes for the 2012 Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested between October 4th through October 26th.

The 2012 Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of dark blue fruits and spices. Notes of cassis, sweet licorice and a juicy core of fruit are balanced by nice acidity and a silky, lingering finish.

To maintain the unique characteristics of the different lots from varying areas of the vineyard, Chief Winemaker Laurie Hook monitored each of the lots through vinification and aging. The wines were then aged in a combination of seasoned oak barrels with a small amount of new oak for 17 months to both round and soften the tannins and bring in some additional spice notes. The foundation of the Waymaker is Syrah, a varietal that demonstrates great richness and generosity from Camatta Hills. Cabernet Sauvignon comprises the majority of the balance of the blend, and lends great depth of fruit as well as lifted spice notes. Laurie blended in a portion of Petite Sirah for its aromatics and rich, inky color.

Wine Advocate | Robert Parker | October, 2014
"A new offering and another terrific value, the 2012 Proprietary Red The Waymaker is a blend from Paso Robles. This 6,000-case cuvée is a blend of 57% Syrah, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petite Sirah and Mourvèdre. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by notes of sweet black cherries, raspberries, and dusty, loamy, peppery, meaty, lavender notes. With a Rhône Ranger-like style, it offers medium to full-bodied, mouthfilling, savory flavors and no hard edges. This beauty should be consumed over the next 4-5 years for its boisterous gusto."
