“The 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is evocative of the rich terroir of Napa Valley, yet a wine that I nd to be immediately approachable and appealing. I pick up aromas of cassis and cherry accented by licorice and roasted coee. The wine has a plush mouthfeel complemented by avor notes of black fruit and brown spice, and there is bright blackberry nish.”
–Laurie Hook, Winemaker

The Vineyards
Beringer’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted to reflect the Napa Valley appellation, but with stylistic differences from the Private Reserve – differences that highlight the range of terroir found in our Napa Valley vineyards. For the 2006 blend, the largest portion of the blend came from Steinhauer vineyard on Howell Mountain, a site notorious for its rich red soils and corresponding intense flavor characteristic. Beringer’s six other reserve vineyards each contribute a portion of the blend, making it expressive of the Napa Valley terroir from valley floor to the highest mountain tops.

Vintage
The 2006 growing season began with a slightly delayed budbreak after quite a bit of Winter and Spring rain. Summer was moderately warm, with the exception of a heat wave in July that helped speed the growth of the vines. Mild weather continued through much of harvest, allowing for consistent and deliberate ripening of the grapes. Grapes for the 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon were picked from September 30th to October 26th.

Winemaking
Laurie was careful to retain the individual expressions of each of the vine- yards in the blend by keeping each lot separate throughout fermentation and aging. This has become tradition for Beringer Cabernets, and allows Laurie to blend from a broad array of aromatic, flavor and structural components. After fermentation all of the lots were aged in 96% percent new French Never oak barrels for 22 months. Each lot was monitored closely and tasted regularly, to ensure its development individually and to formulate how best to fit the lots together for the final blend. The final blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet France and 4% Petite Verdot.

“The 2006 Napa Valley Merlot is an aromatic, inviting wine from the start. This wine is brimming with plum, blackberry and sweet vanilla aromas. The flavors are equally rich – I get black cherry, bittersweet chocolate and a hint of smoke. The tannins are dense, and the finish is supple despite the heft and complexity of the wine overall.”

The Vineyards
Beringer’s Bancroft Ranch vineyard is located at an elevation of 1,800 feet on Howell Mountain, a growing area with well-drained volcanic soils. In 1984, Howell Mountain became the first area within the Napa Valley appellation to be declared a separate viticultural area (AVA) for the distinct characteristics of its wine grapes and now it is home to several of Napa Valley’s most famous wines. Bancroft Ranch produces clusters with small berries whose high skin-tofruit ratio results in well-structured wines with concentrated flavors. The flavors are further enhanced by the climate: the vineyard is about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the valley floor but experiences more hours of sunshine over the course of a day because it is above the fog belt. This allows for both extended hang time and slow, even flavor development. Beringer first vinified grapes from the Bancroft Ranch in 1986, when its Cabernet Sauvignon was chosen for the Private Reserve program.

Vintage
The 2005 growing season began with an early budbreak followed by a cool, wet spring. Summer was also on the cooler side, without the usual warm spells, resulting in a nice, extended growing season. As a result, the harvest was long, allowing the grapes to develop more complexity and layers of flavors, aromas and color. The crop was larger than average, with excellent sugar development and balanced acids. Grapes for the 2005 Bancroft Ranch Merlot were picked between October 16th and November 16th.

Winemaking
The lots were kept separate through fermentation and aging to retain the individual terroir characteristics of each part of the vineyard. After gentle crushing and destemming, the juice and skins were sent to small fermenters where color, flavors and tannins were slowly extracted from the skins as vinification progressed. Ed and Laurie agreed on 100-percent-new customtoasted French Nevers oak barrels to age the wines. After 22 months aging, they were satisfied that the big, Cabernet-like tannins in the Howell Mountain Merlot had enough time to soften, and the aromas from the barrels had integrated well with fruit characteristics from the grapes. Small percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were added upon blending, to elongate the finish and add additional complexities to the blend.

Winemaker's Comments
“This vineyard, and the relationship we’ve had with the Bancroft family, has always been deeply special to Ed and myself. We’ve been making a vineyard-designated Bancroft Ranch Merlot since the 1987 vintage when Ed first demonstrated how fantastic Merlot can be when planted in the right place. Bancroft Ranch consistently produces grapes with amazing concentration of flavors, tannins and structure. The 2005 Howell Mountain Merlot is an exceptionally complex wine, full of espresso and dark cherry aromas that lead into a rich ripe black fruit flavors with hints of cedar and orange rind, brown spice and mint. It has tremendous body, complex layers of black fruit, and a supple, lingering finish.”

“Pinot Noir always presents an incredible array of characteristics, beginning with the aromas of chocolate covered cherries, candied violets and traces of anise and mint that greet the nose. Vibrant red fruit flavors are accentuated by bright acidity, hints of smoke and barrel toast. The 2008 Napa Valley Pinot Noir has a lovely richness and weight, making it a wonderful pairing for many richer dishes.”

This wine displays both tropical and citrus notes, a multi-layered blend of pineapple, orange peel and lemon/lime flavors. The oak brings in lightly toasted notes of vanilla and cinnamon, and there’s an underlying minerality that keeps the wine fresh and thirst-quenching. With an intricately textured body and a creamy finish, this is a richly satisfying wine.

Beringer Vineyards has owned and farmed its Knights Valley vineyards since the mid-1960’s, when the Beringer family recognized that the cobbled, rocky alluvial soils created an ideal spot for growing high quality wine grapes. The Knights Valley designation was first used on a Beringer label in 1974. Beringer was instrumental in garnering official recognition for the area in 1983 as a premier wine growing region in the form of its own American Viticulture Area (AVA) designation. Knights Valley Blanc represents Beringer’s nod to a Graves-style blend, led by the classic white Bordeaux varietals, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

Winemaking
Winemaker Laurie Hook barrel fermented the blend for 9 months in French Nevers oak, half of which were new. The nutty, toasty aromas and flavors lent by the oak give a lush backdrop for its bright, refreshing citrus flavors. The majority of the blend underwent malolactic fermentation (96%), lending a creaminess to the overall blend that balances the crisp acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc.

Laurie's Tasting Notes
Elegant floral and vanilla bean aromas give way to flavors of citrus zest and warm brioche. The 2010 Blanc strikes a wonderful balance between rich body and bright, enticing flavors.
