1977 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

1977 Beringer Private reserve Cabernet

Vintage Notes from time of release

In this second year of a two-year drought, many of the Napa Valley's vines were stressed, yielding a small crop of intensely concentrated wines with good balance and aging potential. Beringer's first Private Reserve bottling was 100-percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the Chabot Vineyard, then known as Lemmon Ranch.

PR Cab components (percentages): 100% Chabot

Tasting Notes

  • Showing beautifully right now, yet still has time
  • Has improved since last time we tasted
  • Suggest use an ah-so to open
  • Eucalyptus, leather, soy, cocoa, coffee, tobacco, earth mint, spice
  • Less noticeable fruit in aroma, but still has lots of black fruit in mouth with brown sugar and cherries in background
  • Nice long finish

In an effort to provide our collectors with up to date information on our wines, Beringer Chief Winemaker Laurie Hook is delighted to share regular updated tasting notes on Private Reserve Cabernet.

Vintage Notes from time of release

Widely considered among the best California vintages of the 1970s, this year saw above-average temperatures just before and throughout the harvest, which sent the sugars soaring. The resulting wines were ripe, rich and dense, with evident aging potential. The Private Reserve was again made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Chabot Vineyard (Lemmon Ranch). It epitomizes classic characteristics of intensity, polish and individuality; its many elements include red fruits, licorice, hints of mint and eucalyptus.

PR Cab components (percentages): 100% Chabot
