Hosting a Wine Tasting Party

If you have a palate for wine, then hosting a wine tasting party is a great way to experience and appreciate different wines. Throwing a wine tasting party is not only a fun and unique way to host guests, but it is also a great way to sample a variety of wines with fellow wine lovers. Once you've decided to host a party centered on wine and cheese, it is time to purchase all the necessary ingredients that will help make your party a success.

Types of Wine

There are many different types of wine, but you may want to host a party that focuses on a specific type of wine such as California wines, Chianti wines, white wines, red wines, or local wines. Once you've decided on wine type, pick five or so different varieties to feature at your wine tasting party.

Keep in mind that one bottle of wine has approximately ten tasting samples – if each sample given is approximately one and a half ounces – so make sure you have enough wine on hand based upon the number of people attending.

Party Planning

Keep your guest list short when hosting a wine tasting party if you do not want to risk ruining the intimacy. Wine tasting is meant to be shared amongst a close group of friends; having scores of people could take away from the enjoyment. Also make sure there is adequate seating for all of your guests and that there are enough wineglasses. With a variety of wines to be sampled for multiple people, you do not want to run short on glasses.

It is also important to remember that at a wine tasting people do not always drink their wine completely. Keeping wine tasting dump buckets near your guests will allow them to pour leftover wine effortlessly and without any mess. To help cleanse palates during the wine tasting, it is a good idea to keep crackers or French bread on hand.

Once you have decided on which wines to serve at your wine tasting party, prepare a tasting sheet for your guests. A tasting sheet should contain a list of wines being sampled along with a short description of them. Provide one wine tasting sheet per guest and don't forget to provide pencils or pens so your guests can make notes of which wines they like the most.
