Beringer’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted to reflect the Napa Valley appellation, but with stylistic differences from the Private Reserve – differences that highlight the range of terroir found in our Napa Valley vineyards. Possessing great structure and concentration, this wine is still immediately approachable and appealing.
VINTAGE & VINEYARDS
The 2011 vintage began with a wet winter and cool spring that delayed bloom and reduced fruit set, resulting in lower yields in many parts of the North Coast region. Cool temperatures delayed ripening by several weeks, a timetable that continued through the cooler-than-usual summer season. Few high heat events occurred at any point in 2011, and growers managed more open vine canopies to ensure sunlight, warmth and good air circulation around the grape clusters. For the 2011 blend, the largest portion came from several of our reserve vineyards -- Steinhauer Ranch Vineyard in the Howell Mountain AVA, and the St. Helena Home
Vineyard which was part of the original acreage purchased by Jacob and Frederick Beringer in 1865. The blend is one that highlights the best of Napa Valley’s valley floor and mountain-top terroir. Grapes for the 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested between October 18th and November 5th.
Laurie was careful to retain the individual expressions of each of the vineyards in the blend by keeping each lot separate throughout fermentation and aging. This has become tradition for Beringer Cabernets, and allows Laurie to blend from a broad array of aromatic, flavor and structural components at blending time. After fermentation the lots were aged in 50% percent new French Never oak barrels for 14 months. Each lot was monitored closely and tasted regularly, to ensure their development individually and to formulate how best to fit the lots together for the final blend.
LAURIE’S TASTING NOTES
Ripe red fruit and blackberry notes are complemented by hints of cedar and cocoa powder. The 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a nice structure, round tannins and a silky finish.
